Cunningham started on '57 unbeaten NCAA champs

Bob Cunningham, a starting guard on North Carolina's unbeaten 1957 national championship squad, died Tuesday morning at the age of 70.

Cunningham was the defensive specialist for Frank Maguire's Tar Heels, who went 32-0 that season. The New York native, part of a city pipeline that helped ignite the Tar Heels program, averaged 7.2 points and 6.6 rebounds a game on a team led by star center Lennie Rosenbluth, the 1957 national player of the year.

North Carolina capped off its perfect season by toppling Wilt Chamberlain and Kansas in the title game, 54-53 in triple overtime. The Tar Heels had survived Michigan State 74-70, also in three overtimes, in the semifinals.

Dallas Morning News: Stackhouse many players in one

The Dallas Morning News has a great article on all of Jerry Stackhouse's efforts to raise awareness about diabetes. His hosting of events has been a huge part of the success of CarolinaPros.

By RACHEL COHEN / The Dallas Morning News

People see Jerry Stackhouse testifying before Congress to promote diabetes research.

They hear about him punching a teammate over a card game.

They listen to him sing the national anthem at American Airlines Center.

They read how he couldn't share the spotlight with a teammate.

And they don't know what to think.

NBA Finals - Another Tar Heel winner

As two teams without championships, Miami Heat and the Dallas Mavericks, prepared for 2006 NBA Finals, the Carolina family stand to shine no matter who wins the title.

CarolinaPros World's Greatest Alumni Game host Jerry Stackhouse suits up for the Mavericks. Stackhouse is the fourth leading scorer on the squad at 13 points per game, three assists and three rebounds. After years of high scoring, Stackhouse sacrified his personal stats to play the Dallas team game - and that approach has him and them on the brink of a title.

While no former Heels don the jersey of the Heat, a former Tar Heel and Basketball Hall of Famer Bob McAdoo sits on the Miami coaching staff. McAdoo, a three-time NBA scoring champion won two championships with Los Angeles Lakers near the end of his 14 years playing tenure in the NBA. Having spent his final years in the NBA playing for Pat Riley, the then coach of the Lakers then, McAdoo now serves as one of Riley’s assistant coaches in Miami.

While not quite as visible as Stackhouse around town still, McAdoo still comes back to the area as his sons attend the UNC basketball camp and he has family in the area.

More about Jerry Stackhouse's Triple Threat Foundation, which benefits from CarolinaPros events

I think people see my angry scowl and how I act when I play and assume I'm a hard guy. They're surprised to see that I have feelings. I'm human. I'm just a human being who plays basketball on Television. I feel very comfortable with who I am and what I'm doing. I want to use myself and what's around me to help others.

Both of Jerry's parents currently live with Diabetes and two of his sisters have died due to diabetes related complications. In July 2002, Jerry founded the "Triple Threat Foundation" (TTF) to help his parents and thousands of others across the country in their battle with Diabetes. The TTF's goals are to increase funding for diabetes-related research, patient care, and prevention; promote the importance of daily activity and maintaining a proper diet; and encourage behavioral changes that lessen the risk of diabetes and other serious medical conditions caused by obesity.

The TTF is building a network of people, organizations and corporations who share this mission and are working to develop healthy living initiatives that educate and empower our nation's youth.

The mission of the TTF is ensure that funds are available for continued research, care and clinics as well as education and awareness programs related to diabetes, especially for minorities.

The TTF supports many worthwhile organizations that are also committed to helping young people and their families live healthy lives and prevent diabetes such as the American Diabetes Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the VERB Program created by the Center for Disease Control, the President's Council for Physical Fitness, the Joslin Diabetes Center and the Diabetes Research Foundation, among others. In addition, he has spoken in front of Congress twice to address the importance of funding as it relates to research and treatment for minorities with diabetes.
