I think people see my angry scowl and how I act when I play and assume I'm a hard guy. They're surprised to see that I have feelings. I'm human. I'm just a human being who plays basketball on Television. I feel very comfortable with who I am and what I'm doing. I want to use myself and what's around me to help others.
Both of Jerry's parents currently live with Diabetes and two of his sisters have died due to diabetes related complications. In July 2002, Jerry founded the "Triple Threat Foundation" (TTF) to help his parents and thousands of others across the country in their battle with Diabetes. The TTF's goals are to increase funding for diabetes-related research, patient care, and prevention; promote the importance of daily activity and maintaining a proper diet; and encourage behavioral changes that lessen the risk of diabetes and other serious medical conditions caused by obesity.
The TTF is building a network of people, organizations and corporations who share this mission and are working to develop healthy living initiatives that educate and empower our nation's youth.
The mission of the TTF is ensure that funds are available for continued research, care and clinics as well as education and awareness programs related to diabetes, especially for minorities.
The TTF supports many worthwhile organizations that are also committed to helping young people and their families live healthy lives and prevent diabetes such as the American Diabetes Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the VERB Program created by the Center for Disease Control, the President's Council for Physical Fitness, the Joslin Diabetes Center and the Diabetes Research Foundation, among others.
