Cunningham started on '57 unbeaten NCAA champs

Bob Cunningham, a starting guard on North Carolina's unbeaten 1957 national championship squad, died Tuesday morning at the age of 70.

Cunningham was the defensive specialist for Frank Maguire's Tar Heels, who went 32-0 that season. The New York native, part of a city pipeline that helped ignite the Tar Heels program, averaged 7.2 points and 6.6 rebounds a game on a team led by star center Lennie Rosenbluth, the 1957 national player of the year.

North Carolina capped off its perfect season by toppling Wilt Chamberlain and Kansas in the title game, 54-53 in triple overtime. The Tar Heels had survived Michigan State 74-70, also in three overtimes, in the semifinals.
